July is the seventh month of the year.


July was named by the Roman Senate in honour of Roman general and statesman
Julius Caesar in 44 B.C., being the month of his birth. Before then it was called
Quintilis, being the fifth month of the calendar that started with March.

In 1770 – Lexell's Comet is seen closer to the Earth than any other comet in
recorded history, approaching to a distance of 0.0146 astronomical units
(2,180,000 km; 1,360,000 mi).

In 1874 – The Sholes and Glidden typewriter, the first commercially successful
typewriter, goes on sale.


In 1881 – The world's first international telephone call is made between St. Stephen,
New Brunswick, Canada, and Calais, Maine, US

In 1890 – Canada and Bermuda are linked by telegraph cable.

In 1963 – ZIP codes are introduced for US mail.

In 1966 – The first color television transmission in Canada takes place from Toronto.

In 1970 - Traffic released "John Barleycorn Must Die"


In 1972 – The first Gay pride march in England takes place.

In 1975 - UFO released "Force It"

The somewhat controversial original album cover was designed by Hipgnosis. The nudity on the cover
verged on breaching decency standards and the sexes of the couple in the bathtub were not known for
several years. The models were later revealed to be Genesis P-Orridge and Cosey Fanni Tutti


In 1979 – Sony introduces the Walkman.
