On this day in 1883 - At a protest in Paris led by approximately 15,000 unemployed people, carpenters, and workers, Louise Michel displayed the black flag, making it a central symbol of the anarchist movement.

In 1959 – The Barbie doll makes its debut at the American International Toy Fair in New York.

In 1961 – Sputnik 9 successfully launches, carrying a dog and a human dummy.
In 1969 - The Shaggs record "Philosophy of the World". Numerous music critics and historians consider it the worst album ever recorded. Years later both Frank Zappa and Kurt Cobain call it one of their favorites.
In 2011 – Space Shuttle Discovery makes its final landing after 39 flights.
