1863 – Samuel Clemens used his pen name “Mark Twain” for the first time in the Virginia newspaper, Territorial Enterprise.
1918 – The Twin Peaks Tunnel in San Francisco, California begins service as the longest streetcar tunnel in the world at 11,920 feet long.
1966 - Luna 9 becomes the first spacecraft to make a soft landing on the Moon, and the first spacecraft to take pictures from the surface of the Moon.

1984 - STS-41-B is launched using Space Shuttle Challenger.
1989 - "Wild Thing" by Tone Loc becomes the first rap single certified Platinum, with sales of over a million.

From the early 1980s, Heimlich advocated malariotherapy, the deliberate infection of a person with benign malaria in order to treat ailments such as cancer, Lyme disease and HIV. As of 2009 the treatments were unsuccessful, and attracted criticism as both scientifically unsound and dangerous. The U.S. FDA and CDC have rejected malariotherapy and, along with health professionals and advocates for human rights, consider the practice "atrocious".
