On this day in 1835 – Elias Lönnrot signed and dated the foreword to the first version of the Kalevala, the so-called Old Kalevala.
In 1983 – The final episode of M*A*S*H airs, with almost 110 million viewers.
Stories persist that the episode was seen by so many people that the New York City Sanitation/Public Works Department reported the plumbing systems broke down in some parts of the city from so many New Yorkers waiting until the end to use the toilet. These stories have all since been identified as part of an urban legend dating back to the days of the Amos and Andy radio program in the 1930s.
In 1990 – Space Shuttle Atlantis is launched.
In 1993 – ATF agents raid the Branch Davidian church in Waco, TX with a warrant to arrest the group's leader David Koresh, starting a 51-day standoff.
